Coach creed number

The number stamped on the leather creed patch inside. Month and year for about 1994–2006; after that, the style, and the model for a short list of current Coach bags.

Type it as you see it – “No.”, spaces, a missing hyphen or an O instead of a zero are all fine. From about 2014 some bags have a blank creed and the code on a small white fabric tag in a seam or pocket.

How to read a creed number

From about 1994 the first letter is the month: A for January through H for August, then J, K, L and M for September to December – there is no I. The digit after it is the last digit of the year (4 = 1994 … 3 = 2003; a single 0 is 2000). The next character is a factory code that Coach never explained, and the digits after the hyphen are the style number.

In 2004–2006 the year is written with two digits (04, 05, 06). From about 2006 the part before the hyphen becomes a letter and four digits, and the style grows to five characters. Coach has not published how to read a date from this newer part, so we don’t show one – only the style, and the model when the style is on our short list of current Coach bags.

An F in front of the style marks a piece made for Coach Outlet stores. That is a genuine Coach line.

What the creed can’t tell you

  • Whether the bag is genuine. Creed numbers are copied, and a real creed can be sewn into another bag.
  • The factory or country – no public key exists.
  • A model from a four-digit style: Coach reused them across eras.
  • A date for digits-only numbers from before 1994 (short ones like No. 00138 included), for Coach 1941 model numbers or for samples.

Genuine pieces that confuse decoders

  • Wallets and other small leather goods often have no creed.
  • Many bags from the 1960s and early 1970s have no creed number. Where numbers started is not clear-cut, so both are normal for that era.
  • Coach 1941 bags (Rogue, Dinky, Saddle and others) carry a model number such as RG 20315 on the creed.
  • Samples carry a number made only of zeros.
  • Coachtopia pieces also carry an NFC chip and QR code; the creed rules here may not apply to them.
